DYP-928 TYPE — should you buy it?
Previously we have written an article for the Pseudo stun guns” section of our blog about 1101 Type Police stun gun. There we hae talked about how the listed characteristics for the device don`t correspond with the reality, and how it proves ineffective for self-defense.
In this article we will further investigate the stun gun market and talk about another stun gun made in China and sold under the same brand DYP-928 TYPE with anti-grap plates.
Please note that this article was written for the consumers in Russia, and some of the points reference Russian law and market. We hope that the article will be informative for you either way.
«SUPER-POWERFUL» STUN GUN DYP-928 TYPE — SHOULD YOU BUY IT?
This device is being marketed and sold as a stun gun in Russia, even though the cheap Chinese stun guns don`t qualify as such according to GOST R 50940–96). Despite this, the customers are being provided false information and buy these devices as stun guns.
Self-defense — is a very important topic, and when choosing a self-defense weapon, one should know who manufactured it, and whether the device is safe, effective and made with high quality.
But sadly most of the stun guns on Russian market don`t meet their stated characteristics. Their parameters are either written by the manufacturers who want to mislead the customer with great numbers, or by the sellers who want to attract the customer and sell them a low-quality device.
As consumers, we trust the seller to provide us with the accurate information. We don`t expect that someone with change the characteristics of the device on the whim to mislead us. But this is exactly what happens when you look for a cheap stun gun. These devices that cost just 15 dollars boast the parameters that the highest budget wouldn`t allow to produce. Some of them don`t only defy the legal law, but also the laws of physics.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE DYP-928 TYPE STUN GUN?
Let`s look at the parameters of the stun gun DYP-928 TYPE. To be fair, we will take the information from the website that shows up first when you google it. Being the most visited website, these are the parameters that most buyers see.
Declared characteristics of the DYP-928 TYPE stun gun

On another website you can also see the following description: “The high voltage of the discharge of the stun gun guarantees incapacitating the attacker for 40 minutes.”
A little research shows, that the same device under this name has completely different discharge voltage characteristics based on which website you are visiting (it varies from 8000 kV to 50,000 kV).
Also worth noting that you can even buy stun gun DYP-938 TYPE even on marketplaces (this one being the Russian version of Amazon). The sale of stun guns (classified as civilian non-lethal weapons under the Russian law) is prohibited on such websites as they don`t have a license. But since this device is only called “stun gun” the site allows its publication and sale.
Let’s look at the parameters of the DYP-928 stun gun
1) Manufacturer — OSA (in Russia)/ DYP (in China). It should be noted that electroshock devices (stun guns) belong to civilian non-lethal self-defense weapons according to the law “On Weapons” N 150-FZ. This means that to produce and sell stun guns in Russia, the company should have a licence and well as comply with other rules (list all sales and buyers, have a weaponry room). According to the law, it is legal to be selling only Russian-made devices on its territory. There anly several licensed electroshock weapons manufacturers, and they are known by name. “DYP” is not one of them. OSA/DYP is a generic name for stun guns imported from China, you will not have any direct contact to the manufacturer, as well as there will not be any warranty, the seller won`t be able to provide conformity certificates or proof that the device is safe for one`s health. If you are dealing with an honest online-shop, they will exchange your device or refund the money, but they will not carry the responsibility for the manufacturer or provide any proper customer support.
In comparison when you buy stun guns manufactured by OBERON-ALPHA, npo matter when you have bought it or from which store, you can always contact us directly, visit our show-room and get full customer service.
This is not the case with DYP stun guns.
2) Stun gun class — 1st class. GOST R 50940–96 lists the parameters needed to attribute the stun gun to a specific class. Then the stun gun gets certified, its parameters measured. If the stun gun doesn`t get tested and certified, one cannot talk about the stun gun class. This parameter isn`t reinforced by any documents and you shouldn`t trust it.
When you buy a stun gun made and certified in Russia, such as our new stun gun 1st class AVATAR DK.111, you also get a copy of the Certificate of Conformity, which proves that the stun gun has passed the necessary medical and biological tests and is safe to be used against human targets.
3) The discharge voltage is 50,000 kV. 50 million Volts is an measument that is impossible to get in such dimensions of the device if voltage measurement is carried out in accordance with GOST R 50940–96. Class 1 electroshock devices have a voltage of up to 90 kV in accordance with GOST ESU. To get an indicator a thousand times higher would be impossible and would not correspond to the characteristics permitted by law. The real voltage of this stun gun does not correspond even to the 3rd stun gun class. Stores that sell cheap tun guns want to attract a buyer with the wow factor and top-notch parameters, but in reality these characteristics don`t correspond to reality.
4) Flashlight power -100 watts. The work of the DYP-928 TYPE flashlight can be observed in the video uploaded above. It has an ordinary built-in flashlight that can illuminate the road a few meters ahead in the dark.
You can see a 100W spotlight being tested on this video (starting at 7:26). The difference between the stun gun’s flashlight and this spotlight is obvious. It is also worth noting that such spotlights cost up to 300–400 dollars, while 928 Type stun gun costs about 15.
5) The thickness of penetrated clothing/air is 55 mm. This parameter is calculated as half the distance between its control electrodes. If the distance to the object of influence is greater, the electric discharge will “choose” the shortest path and go between the control electrodes. As mentioned earlier, it is difficult to find out the exact size of the device, since it varies in different online stores. Most often it is noted as 170x45x30 mm.
The photo shows how small the distance between the control electrodes is. It is about a third of the width of the stun gun, and based on the size of the stun gun, it is about 15 mm. This means that the real thickness of the breakdown of the DYP stun gun is approximately 7 mm instead of the 55 mm provided.
6. Power supply — Built-in battery. The battery in the DYP-928 TYPE stun gun is lithium-ion. The specific characteristics of the battery are not specified, although this is a very important characteristic for evaluating the power of any stun gun.
7. Features — Antigrab plates.
This design feature is used successfully in stun batons made in Russia — electroshock device ZEUS II.
But the quality and operation of the anti-grab plates in the DYP stun gun raise some questions. Firstly, they are held only by the screw-on electrode, which can be seen on the video at 4:39. This is a very unreliable design. Secondly, on a compact stun gun, this creates a danger for its user, since the high-voltage zone is very close to the grip of the device. Even if the antigrab plates work as stated, their usefulness is debatable. Its electroshock zone is small, and if you wrap your hand around it, there will be contact with the working electrodes in any case.
8. The time of incapacitation the opponent is 40 minutes. If this means loss of consciousness, then such a stun gun would definitely be dangerous for the target`s life and health and wouldn`t be allowed for sale. But this is another made-up parameter. It is unarchievable for fuch a small and cheap device, and the best it can really do is to provide a moderate pain shock and scare the opponent.
Remember, that if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
CONCLUSIONS
Which stun gun to buy is an important decisition, and your life and health may depend on how good your self-defense weapon is. We hope that we can warn you about the devices that you shouldn`t be buying for self-defense, as they don`t meet the characterists attributet to them.
We strongly recommend buying only certified stun guns from a well-known licensed manufacturer.
