The best self — defense is running. What to do if you can’t run away? When is it time to start fighting back, if the fight has not yet went physical?

When is it time to start defending yourself?

When should you fight back against the aggressor? No one can give a universal answer. The choice is always up to you. No two situations are exactly the same. However, there are three situations, it is strongly recommended to take action and fight back against the enemy.

First, if someone tries to tie you up and make you unable to move freely. This makes it impossible for you to fight back in the future and makes you defenseless.
Secondly, if the aggressor tries to move you to another, more secluded or convenient place for him (around the corner of the house, in the building entrance, in the car). Start resisting, fighting, or calling for help as soon as it starts happening. Moving to a new location will increase the risks for you, and there is no reason to delay self-defense, even if the situation does not yet seem critical.
Third, the larger the group that is attacking you, the less effective your words will be. Being a crowd makes them more aggressive and gives them a sense of impunity. Almost no words or actions will change their intentions, so start preparing for a fight. Use self-defense weapons or improvised street weapons, consider ways to retreat or draw attention to the situation, start acting, because if you wait or try to negotiate with them, you are wasting time.

Self-defense strategy

So, you have no way to escape, and you decide to fight back. There are three strategies that should be followed in the case of a physical attack.

Strategy number one — play your game, not follow the role assigned to you.

The criminal has a plan and his own idea of how the attack will take place. He chose you as a victim because he expects a certain development of events. Do something that doesn’t fit into his plan, will disrupt his rhythm, shake his confidence, and make it harder to execute his plan.

Strategy number two is to attack, not defend. No one can block or evade an attack forever, regardless of their level of combat training. The longer you try to avoid the blows, the more likely it is that the aggressor will harm you. Instead of thinking about what he does, start thinking, what can you do?

Strategy number three - attack the problem, not the person. This is not the time to think about what went wrong and why you were unlucky enough to get into trouble. Emotions in relation to the criminal will only become an obstacle in ensuring your safety. By keeping a sound mind and soberly assessing the situation, you will be able to ensure your safety.
