Self-defense tactics: unarmed against a knife
A knife in a fight is often used quickly and unexpectedly. The knife is often kept hidden until the moment of the attack. Being attentive to the situation around you and being prepared for the development of a conflict can determine its outcome for you.
OBERON-ALPHA: Non-lethal self-defense weapons
Running away is the best option to avoid stab wounds, but this is not always possible. It is not always possible to escape from the aggressor, especially if you are in a confined space, standing too close to the enemy, or if the attack caught you by surprise. Running from an armed enemy puts you in danger of getting hit in the back.
Common techniques that are taught in self-defense courses or videos are almost useless, since in reality the trajectory of the strike can be any, and the “standard” self-defense technique will not work.
The probability of getting hurt in a fight with a knife is almost 100%. But there are several tactics that will help you recognize the likelihood of an attack, prepare for an attack, and block the knife before the first strike.
Self-defense strategy against the knife
1. Be careful. Notice the environment around you and assess potential dangers.
2. Control the distance between you and your opponent. If you have the opportunity to keep a distance with an aggressive person-do it.
3. Watch your opponent’s hands. If someone approaches you and you don’t see their hand/arm, automatically assume that they are armed with a knife.
4. Keep your hands free of foreign objects and raised. This way you can immediately attack first, if necessary, or block the weapon.
5. Your chance to repel an attack with a knife is to grab and press the hand in which the aggressor holds the knife, either to your own or to his body. It is optimal to do this as soon as it starts the first movement.
6. Don’t forget about improvised weapons. If you are unarmed, but can use foreign objects for self-defense, do so.
